During the previous school holidays (October 2015), Pippa Sherriff travelled to Christchurch to participate in the Canterbury Junior Spring Open. She played in the 11 year old girls section and was seeded number 3. Two pools were created which would have the top 2 players in each pool moving forward to the next rounds.
Pippa’s first match was against Lucy Crawford from South Canterbury which she won convincingly 4/2, 4/1. Pippa’s second match was a much tougher affair against Rani Mcguire from Canterbury. There were a lot of long rallies but Rani ended up winning the match 5/4 5/4 (both sets went to tie-breakers). Pippa’s third match against the number 1 seed Natalie Hetherington from Canterbury was more convincing than the first match winning it 4/0, 4/1. She played very well in this match. After round robin play Pippa was ranked second in her pool behind Rani. It was time for semi-finals to decide on the top 4 placings.
Pippa’s semi-final was against Kate Crawford from South Canterbury. This was a very important match for Pippa as both these players are also trying to make it into the 12 girls Southern team to play against the likes of Auckland and Central in the National Teams event in January 2016. Pippa started off well winning the first set 4/2 but Kate came back winning the second set 4/2 as well. The 3rd set ended up a tie-breaker which Pippa won convincingly 7/0. Now onto the final.
Pippa’s final was against Rani (who beat Pippa in a very close match the day before). Pippa is a quick learner and adjusted accordingly to play some fantastic tennis. She won the final 4/0, 4/1.
Pippa has a very busy schedule coming up with the Primary/Intermediate competition on Friday November 6th then Interclub on Saturday followed by a trial day to see if she will be selected for the Tennis Southern team to play in the National Teams event in Auckland on January 8th -11th 2016.
Well done Pippa and good luck with your Southern trials and Primary/Intermediate comps!
